Heading to Queens to Find a Prince
As the 2024 KY Derby trailers conclude their 2-year-old season, the following is a preview of the Remsen Stakes taking place this Saturday, December 2nd. This race holds value, totaling 10 points, with 5 designated for the eventual winner. Run on Cigar Mile day each December at Aqueduct in New York, the Grade II Remsen Stakes stands out as an excellent race over one mile and one furlong for two-year-old colts.

The G2 Remsen, with a total prize money of $250,000, has held its place on the NYRA stakes schedule since as far back as 1904 when it was conducted at the nearby Jamaica Race Course, a tradition that persisted until the venue closed its doors in 1959.
The race distance changed several times through the 1940s and 1950s, settling for a time at one mile when the race was moved to Aqueduct in 1959. This middle distance made the Remsen a solid but less strenuous test of stamina for lightly-raced youngsters, and the change produced a pair of Derby winners as Carry Back (1960-61) and Northern Dancer (1963-64) both parlayed Remsen victories into glory on the first Saturday in May.

The Contenders
Todd Pletcher trains Private Desire, a colt sired by Constitution, who recently ran 4th in the Nashua Stakes at Aqueduct on November 5th. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a successful outing in a 5-horse field as he broke poorly and was erratic throughout the race. The silver lining is that Pletcher is expected to guide him to a stronger effort this weekend.
The stand out horse in the race was Where’s Chris, under the training of NY boss Rick Dutrow, pressed the pace & out dueled the heavy favorite Book’em Danno. Rick Dutrow, reinstated and on fire, has been at the helm of some strong performances this fall. Bill Mott’s Billal also delivered a commendable performance, running well and finishing third after rating from off the pace.
