2024 Road to KY Oaks | Los Alamitos | Betting the Starlet

One And One Sixteenth Miles – Purse $200,000

We’re headed to Los Alamitos for the Grade 2 Starlet, which is for two-year-old fillies going a mile and a sixteenth around the dirt track. We have 6 contenders in a very competitive race. We’re hoping to see some future 2024 KY Oaks contenders!

The Contenders

The 9-5 favorite is Bob Baffert’s Nothing Like You, an experienced filly that won the Desi Arnaz Stakes at Del Mar with a strong closing effort. Clearly, she’s definitely a win contender and a Must-Use. On the other hand, Pacific Rose ran a closing 3rd in the Chandelier Stakes at Santa Anita against fellow rival Chatalas, who won that race. However, Doug O’Neill has a poor track record with graded stakes winners, so it’s a PASS.

As for 3 Flynn’s Chance, priced at 8-1, she might round out exotics. You could consider playing her as an improvement 2nd off the layoff. Importantly, she held up well in a hot pace vs. Great Forty Eight in her last race. Moving on to #4 Great Forty Eight, who broke her maiden at Del Mar a month ago and ran a distant 2nd to Nothing Like You before that. Notably, Tim Yakteen is looking to upset his mentor in this one. Overall, it seems like an Exotics Play

Early on in the BC Juvenile Fillies, 5 Chatalas got bumped around and was never in it. Despite moving inside the stretch to 7th, jockey Antonio Fresu decided to fight another day. In this 6-horse field, she is going to be a huge factor. Trainer Mark Glatt doesn’t have many 2-year-olds this season; however, he’s at 23% winners, and 8 out of 13 have hit the board. Sired by Gun Runner, this is a classic bounce back for the win.

As for #6 Grazia, she broke her maiden first out. How many times have we watched the ‘other’ Bob Baffert entry win the race at a value? Sired by Uncle Mo, she’s had a couple of good works since the win.

In terms of strategy, you can’t really know for sure who makes the jump in this one. However, we do know Bob Baffert dominates this event. I’ll bet the 5-6 on top here, and the tote board may reflect the 6 by the time they break this evening. The 5 Chatalas is going to bounce back, and the 6 will appreciate the added distance. She’s ready. Additionally, I do like the 3 Flynn’s Chance to crash the exotics. I won’t be shocked to see Nothing Like You pull off the hat trick and make it three straight.
